| Description | He will no doubt recall that in February 1911 the Royal Society and Royal Geographical Society, with the approval of H M Treasury, resolved to hand over the balance of the National Antarctic Expedition amounting to £668.8.3 to the British Antarctic Expedition 1910. Of this sum £341.9.2 was handed over to the British Antarctic Expedition (BAE) without conditions. The remaining £326.19.1 was accepted by the Expedition subject to the conditions which Speyer stated should be observed, that it was to be retained until the expedition was concluded, when if any government claims existed, they were to be paid out of it before it was used for making other payments.
The £326.19 has been held on behalf of the BAE by Messrs Cocks, Biddulph & Company, but it still stands at their bank to the account of Kempe and E S Cocks, who were Treasurers of the National Antarctic Fund. By accumulation of interest it now stands at £352.16.4.
Last April Kempe had a letter from the Treasury stating that they had ascertained that expenses amounting to £382.7.6 had been incurred by the Admiralty in connection with the British Antarctic Expedition 1910. In these circumstances they say that the Treasury share of the balance is therefore available for the general purposes of the British Antarctic Expedition. Kempe had expected a letter asking for the amount held by the Royal Society be transferred to Speyer or the Admiralty. Asks what course he wishes the Society to take. |
