TitleCopy letter from Arthur Schuster, Secretary of the Royal Society to the Secretary, Board of Agriculture
Date20 May 1915
Description'In answer to your letter of May 17 I directed to inform you that the question of the renewal of the convention of the International Geodetic Association and of any modification of its constitution rests with the Government and not with the Royal Society. In case that Society should ne consulted by the Government on the specific point mentioned in M Lallemand's letter, they would certainly support the proposal that the locality of the Central Bureau and the personality of the Director should be left to the choice of the General Conference. Before joining the International Association of Seismology this country insisted that a corresponding provision should be inserted in the Statutes of that body and we are therefore already committed by precedent to the principle involved.
The Royal Society does not wish however to commit itself to the opinion that no other changes should be made in connection, or even that the Geodetic Association should be continued after the expiration of its present period. They would prefer therefore that the whole discussion of this matter be adjourned till after the conclusion of war.'
