TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary, Smithsonian Institution
Date16 March 1894
DescriptionBoth pages of the letter are crossed through and annotated 'cancelled'.

Foster explains that the President and Council of the Royal Society have long had under consideration the completion of a subject-index to their 'Catalogue of Scientific Papers', and have recently heard that the Smithsonian Institution had been considering the same project. As it would be a waste to duplicate effort, he asks if they could inform the Society whether it is true that they have such an intention.

He further states that they believe the subject-index to be of great importance, and if it were carried out by some other body they could instead devote themselves to the more rapid printing of the Catalogue itself, the difficulties of which increase year by year.
