Title | Copy letter from Herbert Rix, to Sir John Evans, Treasurer, Royal Society, care of Mrs Longman, 27 Norfolk Square, W. |
Date | 20 March 1894 |
Description | Rix has refrained from troubling Evans with matters of business, but writes concerning a matter requiring an immediate answer.
He explains that Charles Chree wrote on 26 February to state that the Kew Observatory accounts for 1892/3 had been audited as usual by a member of the Committee, Lord Rossse, and to ask whether a further audit is required by the Royal Society in line with paragraph nine of the Memorandum of Association; or whether the Kew Committee may regard themselves as possessing the authority of the Society for auditing the accounts of 1892/3, and of future years, until they receive notice to the contrary. At the Council meeting of 15 March it was felt that a decision should be deferred until Evans' return, but that since then Chree has written urgently to state that they cannot publish their report until the question is answered.
Rix writes to ask whether the formality of a second audit is necessary, and if not, whether the Kew Committee may publish their report in anticipation of the Council agreeing with Evans' opinion. The report must be ready by 30 March, so he asks if Evans will write or telegraph so he may answer before that date. |
