Title | Correspondence with HT Tizard |
Date | 1943-1958 |
Description | Correspondence of various dates as follows:
Letter from Tizard to all members of Committee for Scientific Survey of Air Warfare, 26 June 1940, resigning as Scientific Adviser to the Chief of Air Staff, and as Chairman of the Committee.
In this letter Tizard states: 'With the change of Government matters have become worse in this respect, not better. There are too many advisers and too much conflicting advice; responsibilities are not clear cut, and in consequence action is slow… I have therefore resigned my post as Scientific Adviser, and as Chairman of the Committee, I have also told the Secretary of State that I do not think that the Committee can continue to be of much help unless there is a change in the organisation'.
Also included is the manuscript draft of Blackett's letter to Archibald Sinclair (Secretary of State for Air), resigning from the Committee ('I am in entire agreement with Sir Henry Tizard that the Committee cannot function usefully under the present conditions') and arguing strongly for Tizard to be given 'a position of high executive authority in relation to the development and operational trails of new weapons', 20 June 1940; and letter from Sinclair accepting resignation 'with great regret'.
The terms of both Tizard's and Blackett's letters make clear that it was the formation of Churchill's Government, and the increased influence of Cherwell, which led to the resignations, and the end of the Committee.
2 letters, July (1p only) and August 1943
1 letter, March 1945
