Cuttings include obituary notices of Fellows of the Royal Society, notably George John Romanes (pp.3-5); Thomas Henry Huxley (pp.56-65); and Louis Pasteur (pp.71-72). Other topics include the Royal College of Science, South Kensington (pp.5-9); criminal responsibility (p.21); Robert Louis Stevenson (p.95); drunk and disorderly charges against Edwin Ray Lankester (pp.73-75); and Lord Kelvin's jubilee (pp.95-99). The book contains some ephemera, including an anniversary dinner menu for the Geological Society (p.40); a reprint of the poem 'An elegy written in a country bone-cave' [noting Kent's Cavern] by William Pengelly (p.42; and memorial circulars to the Rev T P Kirkman (p.48) and James Dwight Dana (p.50). Several illustrated magazine articles on Fellows or groups of scientists are present. There are notices of university intelligence and various honours given to Fellows. Some letters to editors are collected.
Generally, the cuttings are attributed to the source newspaper and dated in manuscript. The volume contains blank pages, usually on the verso, with the recto pages filled. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'May 12 1894 to May 14 1897. Royal Society Scrap Book. Biographical.' |
