Cuttings include accounts of the Royal Society's conversaziones, anniversary meetings and other events. There are occasional illustrations. Other content: reports on the International catalogue of scientific literature (pp.1-3); total solar eclipse (pp.3-7, 47-51); accounts of Royal Society-funded Coral Island Expedition (pp.9, 13, 21, 36-37) and expedition to Madagascar (p.9); Isaac Newton's house in St Martin's Street (p.39); Dr Nansen and a discussion meeting on proposed Antarctic exploration (pp.53-59); liquid hydrogen (pp.63-65); Victoria and Albert Museum (pp.111-115). Other topics are highly varied. There are some court reports and letters to the editors of the various newspapers are also collected. Some ephemera is present, notably a memorial to Lord Salisbury by Lord Lister and other Fellows of the Royal Society, on Science Museum and College of Science buildings at South Kensington (pp.73-73).
Generally, the cuttings are attributed to the source newspaper and dated in manuscript. The volume contains several blank pages, usually the verso pages of the book. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'July 5 1896 to May 30 1899. Royal Society Scrap Book. General.' |
