Cuttings include obituary notices of Fellows of the Royal Society, notably Henry Bessemer (p.15); William Jenner (p.33); James Paget (pp.65-67); John Bennet Lawes (pp.95-99); Henry Acland (pp.99-101); William Armstrong, Lord Armstrong of Cragside (pp.107-111); and one non-Fellow, the balloonist Henry Coxwell (p.67). Other topics include the death of John Hopkinson, his son and two daughters, in an Alpine climbing accident (pp.25-27); a portrait of Isaac Barrow (p.42); the jubilee of George Gabriel Stokes as Lucasian Professor (p.47); and the candidature of Michael Foster at the University of London (pp.69-77). The book contains some ephemera, including a printed invitation for the President of the Royal Society to attend the Westminster Abbbey funeral of William Ewart Gladstone (p.18); a plan and sale catalogue for Ardmore, Parkstone, Poole, formerly the property of George James Allman (pp.48-49); a Vanity Fair caricature of Lord Rayleigh (pp.62-63); and a funeral notice for David Edward Hughes (pp.78-79). There are illustrated magazine articles on Fellows. Also, notices of university intelligence and various honours, including Diamond Jubilee honours, given to Fellows. Some letters to editors are collected.
Generally, the cuttings are attributed to the source newspaper and dated in manuscript. The volume contains blank pages, usually on the verso, with the recto pages filled. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'May 24 1897 - June 13th 1901. Royal Society Scrap Book. Biographical.' |
