TitlePress cuttings relating to the Royal Society: 'The Challenger'
Date5 December 1872-11 March 1895
DescriptionPress cuttings and other printed information concerning the HMS 'Challenger' and the involvement of the Royal Society in the oceanographic expedition. Compiled by the organisation's staff. The volume contains a chronological series of news cuttings, commencing with the ship's departure from Sheerness. There is one illustration, of the staff and promoters of the Challenger Expedition, from 'The Graphic' (p.3). Longer articles from on board the vessel are provided by the special correspondent of The Daily News. There is some printed ephemera, including a notice from the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, stating that the ship would be left in sea-going condition on its homecoming arrival at Sheerness for the interest of 'Foreign gentlemen and others connected with the Exhibition of Scientific Apparatus...' Later cuttings are concerned with the publication of the scientific reports of Challenger's results and their reception.

Generally, the cuttings are dated, and the source newspapers are sometimes, but not always, identified. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'Scraps. The Challenger'.
