TitlePress cuttings relating to the Royal Society: 'Arctic Expedition 1875-76'
Date17 November 1874-19 May 1877
DescriptionPress cuttings and other printed information concerning the Arctic Expedition and the involvement of the Royal Society. Compiled by the organisation's staff. The polar expedition was commanded by George Nares (lately of the HMS 'Challenger' expedition) using the vessels 'Alert' and 'Discovery'. The preparations for the expedition are followed closely in these press reports, before the ships' departure from Portsmouth. Other vessels mentioned include the 'Valorous' (coaling) and the 'Pandora'. The outbreak of scurvy amongst the crew and the lack of lime-juice prompts critical exchanges with Clements Markham. Some resulting correspondence with members of earlier Arctic expeditions is collected.

Generally, the cuttings are dated, with the source newspapers sometimes, but not always, identified. The book contains many blank pages, the cuutings usually appearing on recto pages only. From p.81 the volume is blank. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'Arctic Expedition, 1875-76.'
