TitlePress cuttings relating to the Royal Society: 'National Antarctic Expedition'
Date28 March 1899-17 September 1904
DescriptionPress cuttings and other printed information concerning the 1901-1904 National Antarctic Expedition (Discovery) and the involvement of the Royal Society and Royal Geographical Society. Compiled by the organisation's staff. The volume commences with reports on fundraising for a proposed Royal Society-Royal Geographical Society expedition, particularly the involvement of Arthur J Balfour in the allocation of a government grant for the purpose. Cuttings on plans for other national expeditions are collected. The launch and outfitting of the 'Discovery' is covered by the press. The expedition, commanded by Robert Falcon Scott, commences and there are some accounts of progress until February 1902, after which cuttings are few until 1904. The ship's reception on return to port and the resulting celebrations are captured.

Generally, the cuttings are dated, with the source newspapers sometimes, but not always, identified. The book contains many blank pages, the cuttings usually appearing on recto pages only. From p.58 the volume is blank. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'National Antarctic Expedition. March 28. 1899-Sept 1904.' The later date is in red dymo tape label.
