DescriptionBrief listing of exhibits at a conversazione held at the Royal Society, Burlington House, London, on the inauguration of the National Appeal by the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning. Exhibits were arranged by Edward Neville da Costa Andrade, by subject. The programme commenced with a reception of guests by the Presidents of the Royal Society and of the British Academy.

I. The three Royal Charters of the Royal Society granted by King Charles the Second, the first Patron.
II. The Charter Book of the Royal Society.
III. The Mace of the Royal Society.
IV. Electricity. A. MS of a paper by Hauksbee on electricity produced by the attrition of several bodies. B. Letter from Hollman to Mortimer (10 January 1744/5) on kindling bodies by electricity. C. Letter from Franklin to Collinson (4 February 1750/1) relating to electrical experiments. D. Manuscript from Abbe Nollet relating to the experiments of Franklin on electricity from the clouds. E. MS Of an unpublished paper by Prince Demetrius Gallitzen describing and electrical conductor. F. Letter from Volta (4 April 1800) enclosing his paper regarding electrical discourses.
V. Magnetism. A. Auzout - manuscript of his magnetical observations. B. Halley - on magnetic variations, original MS. C. Wargentin - on the variation of the magnetic needle, original MS. D. Reamur, R. A. F. de - letter to Martin Folkes (4 May 1745) (the manuscript is shown in a translation made by Folkes). E. paper by Gauss on magnetic intensity (translation).
VI. The telescope. A. Newton's first reflecting telescope and original drawing (copies of the drawing and description were sent abroad by Oldenburg).B. Letter from Huygens to Oldenburg (13 February 1672) assessing the advantages of Newton's telescope as described by Oldenburg. C. Letter from Auzout (12 February 1661) with regard to Huygens' method of grinding lenses. D. Letter from Hevelius to Oldenburg (29 November 1668) relating to his telescope and observations made with it. E. Letter from Spinoza to Oldenburg (20 November 1665). F. Letter from Euler (19 June 1753) with regard to the achromatic lens. G. Letter from Klingenstierna (1755) regarding his theory of the achromatic lens. H. Huygens aerial telescope, a model made by Professor E. N. de C. Andrade F.R.S. I. An object glass of 122 ft. focal length made by Huygens and presented by him to the Royal Society in 1691.
VII. The microscope. A. Hooke's original drawings of ice crystals, cell structure etc. B. Malpighi's original drawings De Ovo Incubato and De Bombyce. C. Swammerdam's original drawings of the lungs etc. D. Leeuwenhoek letters and drawings of animalculae.
VIII. Anatomy of plants. A. Letter from Grew to Malpighi (5 March 1672) concerning the latter's observations on the roots of plants. B. Letter from Boccone to Oldenburg (6 September 1673) desiring to establish a correspondence between English and Dutch botanists profitable to the study of plants. C. Malpighi's original drawings for his Anatome Plantarum. D. Gaertner - manuscript of his paper on marine polyps. E. Sherard - a collection of letters from foreign correspondents.
