DescriptionMonckman writes: 'Le Roux has shown that when a notch is filed into a wire and one side heated there is in general a thermo-electric current. He also found that when two wires of the same metal, with flat ends, are pressed together, so that one forms a continuation of the other, and the wire on one side of the junction is heated, no current is obtained, hut he observed a current in all cases where there was dyssymmetry.' In the process of repeating these experiments, Monckman was 'led to commence a research on the effect of occluded gas by [a] curious phenemenon.'
