TitlePaper, 'On the causes of glacier-motion' by W R [Walter Raleigh] Browne
CreatorBrowne; Walter Raleigh (1842-1884); English civil engineer
Date1882
DescriptionBrowne writes: 'The question of the causes which produce the movement of glaciers, which was at one time so eagerly discussed, would appear to have slumbered for the last ten years. This cannot be said to arise from the fact that a perfectly satisfactory theory has been developed, and recognised as such by all inquirers. The ambiguous allusion to the subject in Sir John Lubbock’s presidential address to the British Association is an evidence that such certainty has not been attained.'

Annotations in pencil and ink throughout. Includes a letter dated 22 October 1881.

Subject: Glaciology

Received 1 June 1882. Read 15 June 1882. Communicated by George Gabriel Stokes.

A version of this paper was published in volume 34 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the causes of glacier-motion'.
