LevelItem
TitlePlate, six specimens of paper treated with vegetable dyes
Date[1842]
DescriptionFour of the paper samples are marked 'H' and annotated on the reverse to indicate they have been treated with an extract from the plant Papaver orientale. The samples are pale yellow in colour with some areas of discolouration from contact with other samples. An accompanying paper [PT/26/13] refers to Herschel's experiments treating paper with a solution of P. orientale and alcohol which can be stained red by exposure to acid and will retain a dormant impression of an image exposed in sunlight that can be revealed by treatment with acid vapor. The paper indicates he sent a sample with a dormant 'stamped' image, no images are immediately visible in the specimens included here.

Two additional samples of paper of a slightly darker yellow are annotated 1) 'G' '1085' and 2) '720' 'J F W Herschel' followed by partially obscured text that appears to be a plate reference for 'The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society' though these experimental samples were not published.
