Title | Referee's report by Joseph Reynolds Green, on a paper 'A conjugating "yeast''' by B T P Barker |
Date | May 1901 |
Description | Sectional committee: Botany
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. It may be condensed considerably without losing anything of value. The early part in particular goes into a good deal of detail as to the methods et cetera, which need not be set out so fully. All the illustrations should he reproduced. Thinks the paper a valuable contribution to their knowledge of fungi and that it marks a distinct advance. It would make more of an impression on the reader if the points were set out more [?]. The content of pages one to seven which deal very fully with the modes of cultivation and appearance of the colonies under different conditions does not bear especially on what is the important subject of the paper; conjugation. Thinks the author ought to set out briefly the diagnostic features of the yeast, not exceeding two pages in length. Pages seven to 13 are very important. The succeeding interpolated pieces of manuscript dealing mainly with the difficulties in the cultivation might be considerably condensed. Pages 13-29 are also very important. The section on fermentation should be much condensed.
The importance of the paper lies in the author's discovery of a sexual process in yeast and everything else should be subordinate to this.
