Title | Letter from Henry Sessions Souttar, on his paper, 'The properties and theory of the capillary electrometer, with reference to Professor Hermann's observations on the same subject' to Joseph Larmor |
Date | 8 April 1902 |
Description | Sectional committee: not stated
With regard to his recent paper on the capillary electrometer, Souttar has read Larmor's article in the Philosophical Magazine. He entirely agrees with all that Larmor says and fears he cannot therefore have expressed his meaning clearly in his own paper. Asks Larmor to tell him what the statements he disapproves of are in his paper. At present he has two recent papers in his hands, both by physiologists of great eminence, one of whom believes that metallic and electrolytic conduction are identical, while the other thinks the rise of water in a capillary tube is caused by alterations in surface tension due to the curvature of the meniscus. The electrometer is really only used by physiologists and it is for them that his short account was primarily intended. However he is anxious that it is correct as far as it goes. He hopes soon to read Helmholtz's original papers as he has not had access to them in Aberdeen.
