TitleReferee's report by Edward Waymouth Reid, on a paper 'Mechanical and electrical response in plants' by Jagadis Chunder Bose
Date11 June 1904
DescriptionSectional Committee: not stated [Botany and Physiology]

At the Secretary's request Reid has again read the paper by Bose, Bose's paper in the 'Journal of the Linnean Society', and Dr Waller's two papers, 'Researches in vegetable electricity and 'Electric response in ordinary plants, under Mechanical stimulus'. With reference to Geikie's letter and the allegation that the paper now submitted by Bose consists of the same material in amplified form as that which appeared in the Linnean paper, Reid thinks this is unfounded. Discusses the differences he notes. Regarding the allegation that the statements in both papers are essentially a repetition and development of statements made by another author [Waller], Reid thinks this also unfounded and explains why. Wishes it to be expressly understood that he is not expressing any opinion upon a comparison of the Linnean paper of Bose and the two papers by Waller.

Reid is still able to recommend that the paper submitted be published in Philosophical Transactions after condensation, the addition of a complete account of the literature indicating previous work of cognate kind, and the removal of certain figures and replacement of others by numerical tables as indicated in his first report.
