Title | Referee's report by Victor Alexander Haden Horsley, on a paper 'A critical account of some anomalous conditions of the cerebrum in the human foetus' by Wynfrid Lawrence Henry Duckwork |
Date | 14 January 1906 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Physiology
Notes a large part of the paper has not been sent to him. The remaining parts, which are voluminous, are a valuable contribution to the subject and should be published in Philosophical Transactions. Of the part of the paper he has seen he does not think it can be materially reduced, except in Section II, page 72, where many references might be arranged and more closely abbreviated. Suggests the morphological sketch in section III page 112 be embodied in a general introductory summary taking the place of the part of section I, on page three. The pen and ink drawings could all be reproduced with advantage and especially if reduced by photography to half size. The photographs are not of equal value and a selection must be made. Where not duplicated, each of the encephalic photographs should be reproduced. In general Horsley thinks this a paper of considerable anatomical interest which represents an immense amount of careful and accurate work. It should be judged from the point of view of the mount of detail furnished rather than the actual originality of the observations. The subject of the research is not one from which markedly original conclusions can be expected and yet it demands a great expenditure of time and work to secure facts such as those contained in Duckworth's paper.
