Title | Referee's report by William Bateson, on a paper 'A mathematical theory of evolution, based on the conclusions of Dr. J. C. Willis' by George Udny Yule |
Date | 26 January 1924 |
Description | Sectional committee: Botany [later changed, as paper is eventually published in Philosophical Transactions A - the mathematical, physical and engineering sciences].
Referee doesn't know whether to recommend the paper for publication or not. Seems to view the paper in a negative way, as it 'ought not be treated as a serious contribution to evolution'. Believes the paper belongs in the A section of Philosophical Transactions (it is later changed to this). Contains note which states: 'No responsibility can be attached to me, I make no further difficulty about the publication of Dr Yule's paper. Van Gogh's Postman is to appear in the National Gallery, so I suppose we must expect Post-Impressionist science in the Phil. Trans'. Asks for his report to be preserved.
[Published in Philosophical Transactions A, 1925].
