TitleReferee's report by George Neville Watson, on a paper 'Asymptotic formulae for hypergeometric functions' by Thomas MacFarlane Cherry
Date1949
DescriptionSectional committee: Mathematics

He finds the paper quite unreadable and has tried to read it several times but still hasn't finished it. His difficulty in reading arises form the 'journalism' of the paper. However, he doesn't think the author's arguments are inaccurate. The abridged symbolism is unfortunate as it 'does not bring out the individuality of the functions'. The analysis is 'dull' and some of the details could have been omitted. Doubts whether the table would fit into Proceedings.

[Published in Proceedings of the Royal Society A, 1950 with the title 'Asymptotic expansions for the hypergeometric functions occurring in gas-flow theory'].
