TitleReferee's report by George Howard Darwin, on a paper 'Sur la stabilite de l'equilibre des figures pyriformes affectees par une masse fluide en rotation' by Jules Henri Poincare
DateNovember 1901
DescriptionSectional Committee: Mathematics

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, in full and without modification'. Illustrations are not mentioned. The treatment of the natural energy of a thick layer of deformation is most remarkable and shows the author's extraordinary power of finding a way through the most intractable problems. His result that it is indifferent whether the external or internal gravitation formula is used is also interesting. It is however not very difficult to obviate the use of the latter theorem. He has done this in some unpublished work referred to in the last section of his paper.

[Published in Philosophical Transactions A, 1902].
