TitleReferee's report by Ralph Allen Sampson, on a paper 'A practical method of computing the oblique foci of optical systems' by H Dennis Taylor
Date11 January 1904
DescriptionSectional Committee: Mathematics

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions.. A short introduction is desirable. The illustrations are essential to the paper. In general notes the subject of this paper has been treated over and over again by very different methods and is necessarily tedious. Thinks it desirable that a reader should be able to correlate the present treatment with other discussions. and grasp its contents with the least labour possible. A discussion like the present one is of very considerable importance, giving in a very clear form the theoretical methods of a practical expert. They may compare it with [Ernst] Abbe's methods as given by [Siegfried] Czapski but the two cannot be said to overlap in any real sense. Sampson has not verified the formulae but has noticed one or two slips and the author should carefully search out any such errors.
