Title | Referee's report by Percy Faraday Frankland, on a paper 'Hydrolysis of cane-sugar by d- and l-camphor-Beta-sulphonic acid' by Robert John Caldwell |
Date | 22 June 1904 |
Description | Sectional Committee: not stated [Chemistry, Physiology]
Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. In view of the entirely negative results obtained, Frankland hardly thinks the paper worth publishing at all, especially as almost exactly similar negative results had previously been obtained by Emil Fischer. If the paper is to be published he thinks only the last set of observations given in the large table should be included. Thinks the author's reference on page three to the work of McKenzie and Marckwald seems most gratuitous and quite unwarranted. Suggests the author either cut this section entirely or explain more fully his reasons for doubting their evidence. Explains why the table on page four should be printed, and the comparative results obtained with chlorhydric acid both in the case of cane-sugars and milk-sugars.
