TitleReferee's report by Percy Faraday Frankland, on a paper 'Note on the free growth of bacteria & some torulae in a solution of neutral ammonia tartrate in distilled water' by Dr Henry Charlton Bastian
Date21 June 1905
DescriptionSectional Committee: not stated.

The paper does not contain anything of sufficient novelty to warrant its publication.

As far as he can gather from the description, the author does not even claim to have taken the precautions which would not be deemed necessary in the investigation of bacterial nutrition. In order to prove that the growths were independent of phosphorous and sulphur, it would be necessary to transplant them many times in succession from one solution to another, in each of which the absence of sulphur and phosphorus had been guaranteed. Moreover, the growth itself should be collected and carefully tested for sulphur and phosphorous. Explains why Bastian's notion that the building up of protoplasm from a tartrate is as simple a process as building it up from carbon dioxide, is obviously quite illogical.
