TitleReferee's report by William Jackson Pope, on a paper 'Hydrolysis of cane-suger by d- and l-camphor-beta-sulphonic acid' by Robert John Caldwell
Date2 July 1904
DescriptionReports on the following three points: whether the criticism on Marckwald and Chwolles should stand; whether the last set of observations in the large table alone should be published; whether the results obtained with chlorhydric acid on both cane sugar and milk sugar should be recorded in equal detail. Generally, the paper is well worthy of publication. It constitutes the first attempt to deal seriously with the problems it attacks and, although the results are negative in character, they certainly possess considerable value in that they serve as a guide to the way in which positive evidence concerning the subject may be obtained.
