Title | Referee's report by Frank Watson Dyson, on a paper, 'An account of the pendulum observations made at Kew & Greenwich observatories in 1903' by Gerald Ponsonby Lenox-Conyngham |
Date | 28 July 1905 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. Pages 20 to 31 can be condensed to one page. The appendix is not reported upon and the illustrations relate to the appendix. The abstract is sufficient. The essential part of the paper is contained in the tables which should be given in full for criticism of the results to be possible. The tables are practically in the same form as Putnam's in the United States Geodetic Survey reports. The rest of the paper is fuller than necessary. Pages one to 18 consist of description of the half seconds pendulum apparatus and its theory. Dyson does not think any description has been published before in English and would not suggest cutting this out. The appendix by Strahan is interesting from the geodetic standpoint as showing the amount of the corrections to 'g' from geological causes, but he cannot offer any criticism on it.
