TitleReferee's report by Sidney Frederic Harmer, on a paper 'A biometrical study of conjugation in paramecium' by Raymond Pearl
Date18 March 1906
DescriptionSectional Committee: Zoologys.

Thinks with regards to the part of the paper submitted to him, the paper should be published in the Philosophical Transactions. Does not suggest any omissions but expresses no opinion with regard to most of the statistical part of the paper, including the appendix. The author should explain his reasons for using the unfamiliar spelling of Paramaecium. The illustrations are almost entirely concerned with the statistical part of the paper and do not come within the scope of the reference to Harmer. States the author's main conclusions. The results seem to be well worth publishing, assuming that they are trustworthy. Taking into account the author's caution in considering possible sources of error, it appears to Harmer probably that his conclusion, based on experience, that measurements on preserved material five reliable results is worth more than an a priori objection to the use of this method.
