Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The mathematical methods followed are exceedingly 'pure' and the results should be of interest mainly to those interested in geophysics, especially to those who have to deal with seismic records. Does not think the author has succeeded in supplying quite the guidance wanted by the physicist to enable him to see the exact bearing of the results and the limitations implied in the mathematical work. The first three illustrations are necessary to elucidate the mathematical integrations. The rest are useful but there seems no reason for reproduction on a large scale. The author's attention seems to have already been called to certain points raised by the first referee and Chree does not consider himself qualified to express an opinion on the points, which seem to depend upon pure mathematics. He does not feel competent to verify the accuracy of the purer parts of the author's mathematics, much less to criticise them. Briefly discusses Lamb's results in relation to those or Lord Rayleigh. Discusses potential misunderstanding of the phrase 'preliminary disturbance' on page 35. Suggests the author place himself in the seismologists's position and explain wherein his results seem to agree and wherein they seem to differ from the movements of actual earth tremors, or rather from the interpretation of these tremors by a horizontal pendulum. Discusses why he does not like the author's use of the phrase 'wave slowness' on physical grounds. Appends a two page list of apparent errata or obscurities, mostly clerical errors which might be of some use to the author and which contains references to the relevant page of the paper.
