Title | Referee's report by William Hallowes Miller, on a paper 'Further researches into the properties of the sulphate of lodo-quinine or Herapathite, more especially in regard to its crystallography, with additional facts concerning its optical relations' by William Bird Herapath |
Date | 21 April 1854 |
Description | Not recommended for publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'. Can only offer 'considerable hesitation' as to whether sections 1-4, 6-8, 29, 44, and 46 merit publication. A full abstract in the Proceedings would be more appropriate. Sections 10-28 and 30-34 are not recommended to publication. Researched into effects of solution on crstallisation are not new, refers to François Sulpice Beudant's 'Mineralogy'. Formula in section 28 'expresses no crystallographic law' and does not require publication. Observations with polarised light are new and carefully made, although 'not very elegantly ennunciated'. In section 34 'The author speaks of "planes of no double refraction". There is no such thing as a "plane of no double refraction" in any crystal not belonging to the entire system'. Notes lack of awareness of polarised light phenomena. Conclusions based upon assumptions.
