TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Dr Maurice V Wilkes, Computer Laboratory, Corn Exchange Street, Cambridge, CB2 3QG, England
Date29 January 1976
DescriptionThanks him for his letter and the complimentary reprints, Gold was very glad to be reminded of this period. What he reported is in accord with Gold's own recollections concerning the building of a memory unit as he had indeed made a stable re-cycled pulse system work at ASE before.

Gold was also responsible for the suggestion, first made to Renwich, that the clumsy 'fingers' of electrical punched tape readers should be replaced by light. This was done, with immediate success, and of course it became the standard way of reading tape. He believes it was Elliot Brothers who took it up from Wilkes' lab.

Was sorry to hear from Wilkes's letter that Renwich has died.
