TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Dr George Mueller, Director, Manned Space Flight Program, National Aeronautics and Space Administration [NASA], Washington DC
Date28 February 1966
DescriptionSending Dr Mueller 'a Luna IX picture, and for comparison purposes one that is obtained in the laboratory from a surface that consists of a fine rock powder in the state in which it ends up when it is bombarded with more rock powder [neither of which is included with this letter] ... I would not like to claim that this appearance proves that the material must in fact be dust. I would claim, however, that the demonstration shows it to be quite unreasonable to claim that the appearance proves that one is seeing lava ... It seems to me inescapable that one is seeing a surface appearance which is caused by the external modifying agents -- bombardment no doubt the most likely'.
