TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Dr Harold C Urey, School of Science and Engineering, University of California, La Jolla, California
Date28 September 1966
DescriptionSays that 'I was really thrilled to see your nice letter in Science. Yes, I was developing a little paranoia, reading everywhere that 'obviously Gold was quite wrong' when I could not imagine what effect of the Surveyor had contradicted my views -- and when after all the footprint made absolutely clear that one was not dealing with hard frozen lava. Your article was what it took to restore my balance'. Goes on to say what the suggestion of a deposit of finely divided material, made in 1955 'to accord for gross features seen in pictures', predicted e.g. served to 'Predict that fine dust would produce the remarkable optical scattering law of the moon's surface (by the packing properties of small grains)'. Says that 'I quite agree with you that one can have different opinions about the chief origin of the powder, but the Surveyor leaves no doubt that a fine powder is widespread, and, from the partly submerged chunks without surrounding indentation, that there is some gradual filling-in taking place'.
