TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Professor Philip Morrison, Department of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Date29 November 1966
DescriptionWould be delighted to come and give a physics colloquium on the surface of the moon. Goes on to say that 'I am sure you are correct with the fluorescence in pre-existing gas for the main effect of the supernova light'. Believes that the same is true for quasars. Says 'The moment one believes that x-rays are a common occurrence in the universe, one has to tackle the problem of their degradation to visible light, in much the same way as bombs. I really do not understand why this subject has been so neglected by astronomers. Of course they have usually suffered from the outlook that God adjusted the spectrum of all objects in the universe to coincide with that of the receivers He gave to His favourite creation. But that argument may not be entirely sound. Perhaps He did not so adjust it or perhaps His favourite creatures have x-ray or radio eyes. I am not sure which it is, since I am not an expert in theology'.
