TitleCorrespondence and papers regarding the USGS Professional Paper 1570 controversy
DateMay 1979-Feb 1995
DescriptionContains correspondence and papers, varying in date from May 1979 until February 1995, regarding the circulation of a letter, dated 5 October 1994, by John M Parker, a consulting geologist, asking Dr Gordon P Eaton, Director of the US Geological Survey, to suppress a book, David G Howell (ed), ‘The future of energy gases’, US Geological Survey Professional Paper 1570 (United States Government Printing Office, Washington, 1993) because it contained papers by Gold, 'The origin of methane in the crust of the earth' and Robert A Hefner III. The letter was signed by 34 people and alleged that Gold had swindled the Swedish out of millions of dollars through his involvement with a project to drill for gas and oil in the Siljan Ring, Sweden. Thomas Gold sued John M Parker and some of those who had signed the letter for libel, a suit that he later dropped. Also contains a paper by Thomas Gold, 'The search for hydrocarbons in the bedrock of Sweden', Oct 1991.
