Succeeded Dr Walter Flight (FRS 1883) in the Mineral Department of the British Museum (Natural History) and was in charge of the chemical laboratory (1887); took charge of the collection of rocks upon the death of Thomas Davies; promoted by Lazarus Fletcher (FRS 1889) to the Directorship of the Natural History Museum (c.1892); Keeper of Minerals (1909-1927).
