Travelled to the Rocky Mountains and Great Basin of North America (1891); seconded to a proposed expedition to British East Africa (1892); joined Sir Martin Conway in the first crossing of Spitsbergen (1896); went to the West Indies (1899); appointed to the chair of geology and mineralogy at the University of Melbourne (1900); director of the geological survey of Victoria (1901); chair of geology at the University of Glasgow (1904-1929); drowned as a consequence of his canoe overturning on the Urubamba River, Peru (1932).
