Career: Physician extraordinary to Queen Anne (1709, sworn one of the physicians-in-ordinary 1712 ); George I and later to George II, who honoured him with a knighthood in 1715. Retired to France (1735-40). During his retirement to the continent, Shadwell witnessed the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, an account of which he supplied to the Royal Society (1737).
