Career:
Worked in general practice and as a hospital physician; Royal Army Medical Corps, based in Cairo (1939-1944); gifted in languages, spoke Arabic, using this when he headed his own field investigation in Iran to trace individuals identified as carriers, but who had made a run for home instead of accepting treatment; after the war, spent a year as registrar in bacteriology at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London (1946-1947); Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine (studying typhoid phage types); joined the government research unit called the Enteric Reference Laboratory, Public Health Laboratory Service, London, (1947-1978), Deputy Director (1952-1954), Director (1954-1978); Director, WHO Collaborating Centre on Drug Resistance in Enterobacteria, Colindale (1960-1978); working with Betty Hobbs, established that the 1964 typhoid fever epidemic in Aberdeen was almost certainly caused by Salmonella typhi sucked into an imperfectly sealed can of corned beef when it was dumped into contaminated water in Argentina to cool; Senior Advisor to the Swann Report (1969) which banned the use of antibiotics in animal feeding stuffs; delivered the Marjory Stephenson Memorial Lecture to the Society for General Microbiology (1975); Honorary DSc, Edinburgh University (1975).
