Beir Memorial Research Fellow and then Carnegie Fellowship Research Fellow, Sydney Hospital under Sir John Eccles (1939-1942); naturalised (1941); served in the Royal Australian Airforce, developing radar in New Guinea during WW2 (1942-1945); returned to A V Hill's department, University College, London (1946) as assistant director of Biophysics Research Unit also worked in Cambridge and at Marine Laboratory, Plymouth with Sir Alan Hodgkin and Sir Andrew Huxley; reader in physiology, University College, London (1950-1951); Professor of Biophysics and head of newly created Department of Biophysics, University College, London (1952-1978); Emeritus professor and honorary research fellow, Department of Biophysics, University College, London (1978)
