As an Irish landowner in parliament, he acted as an intermediary between Ireland and England, in particular during the trial of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Stafford. Under the Adventurers' Act of 1642, he speculatively advanced £1,000 for land acquisitions. The Act was passed in order to raise funds to suppress the Irish Rebellion 1641. Clotworthy gained a considerable estate from this during the 1650s.
