Career:
Second assistant at the Cambridge observatory under Sir Robert Ball (FRS 1873) and demonstrator in practical astronomy in the university (1895); chief assistant (1903-1913); lecturer in surveying and cartography in the Cambridge school of geography and an association with the Royal Geographical Society (1908); gave annual Gresham lectures in astronomy at the University of London (1913-1914); involved with the Geographical Society’s move before the First World War and later in planning centenary extensions, as well as widening the scope of the journal to include cartography; map preparation work for general staff (1914-1918); oversaw the compilation of a map of Europe and the Middle East, including an Arabic edition, for the British Council (c1940).
