Worked for the Board of Trade (1941-1945); became a historian in the Cabinet Office, contributing to the civil economic and socail history of World War II; member of the Committee on Departmental Records (1952) which led to the Grigg Report (1954) and the Public Records Act (1958); Archivist/historian to the UK Atomic Energy Authority (1959), providing her with the opportunity to embark on what was to become her life-work, the history of atomic energy and its social, political and economic implications for peace of war; Reader in Contemporary History, University of Kent (1966); appointed first Professor of the History of Science at Oxford (1972); established, with Nicholas Kurti (FRS 1956) and with the support of the Royal Society, the Contemporary Scientific Archives Centre, Oxford thenat Bath, now at the Science Museum), and was Honorary Director (1973-1986); on Advisory Council on Public Records (1974-1982); on BBC Archives Advisory Committee (1976-1979); on governing body, Imperial War Museum; Trustee, National Portrait Gallery; elected to Fellowship ofthe British Academy (1975)
