Returned to work at Metropolitan Vickers (1951); physics lecturership at Reading University(1951); Professor of Physics, Reading University (1961); Head of Department of Physics, Reading University while serving terms as Dean of Science (1966) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor; chairman of neutron beam research committee of the Science Research Council (1966 - 1974); Dr Lees Professor of experimental philosophy and head of Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford University (1978); Chairman for many years of the neutron beam research committee of the SRC; fellow of Wadham College, Oxford; negotiated an equal partnership for the UK with France and Germany to build special purpose reactor at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble; Chairman of Science and Engineering Research Council (1985 - 1990); senior research fellow, Wadham College, Oxford; chairman of the Diamond Research Fund (-2000); vice-president of the European Science Foundation (1989 - 1992); president of CERN (1991); awarded the Officer's Cross of the German Order of Merit; awarded honorary doctorate from the University of Budapest; honorary doctorates from universities of Reading, Kent and Birmingham;
