Captain, Royal Artillery and served in Malta, Canada, and South Africa (1849); promoted to captain (1855); returned to the UK (1858); Secretary to the Royal Artillery Intitution (1858); Secretary to the Committe on rifled canon (1858) and to the Committee on plates and guns (1859); Assistant Inspector of Artillery (1860); joined the firm of Sir William George Armstrong (FRS 1846) and Company (1860); became partner in the firm (1863); collaborate with Frederick Abel (FRS 1860) and published joint papers(1875-9); in charge of ordnance (1881); Armstrongs and Mitchells amalgamated as Armstrong, Mitchell & Co, whenhe becmae the largest shareholder, and vice-chairman (1882); company merged with Whitworth (1897); became chairman on Armstrong's death (1900); bought the Callendar estate of Ardkinglas, Loch Fyne, Argyll, Scotland (1905).
