Worked in a soda works, Kassel; went to England (1862); patented the recovery of sulphur from Leblanc alkali waste; naturalized British (1880); started an alkali works with J T Brunner, at Winnington, Cheshire (1872), later known and Brunner, Mond and Co (1881); invented the Mond producer-gas plant, making ammonia and cheap producer gas; founded Mond Nickel Company (1888); gave £100,000 for the foundation of the Davy-Faraday laboratory; gave the Royal Society about £16,000 during his lifetime and bequeathed to it another £50,000
