Research assistant to William Augustus Tilden (FRS 1880) at Mason College, Birmingham (c. 1892); research student to the laboratory of Henry Edward Armstrong (FRS 1876) at the Central Technical College, South Kensington (1894); demonstrator in chemistry at the Royal College of Science (1895); assistant professor of chemistry (1902-1913); consultant to dye-using industries (1914); chairman of the technical committee of British Dyes Ltd (1915) and then director (1916); first director of the Salters' Institute of Industrial Chemistry (1918); continued experimental work in the Davy–Faraday Laboratory, Albemarle Street; went to India on the recommendation of Sir W.J Pope, director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (1922); retired (1933) and settled in Mysore, where he also died.
