OtherInfoAs a clergyman and an author, Payne took part in much of the controversy surrounding the 'Popish Plot'. He wrote a number of anti-Catholic tracts, including 'A Discourse of the Adoration of the Host' (1685). All of these publications were later collected in Edmund Gibson's 'Preservative against Popery' (1738).
