Set up his observatory at the Luxembourg Palace (1712-1715), then at the Hotel de Taranne (1716-1719); worked at the Royal observatory (1719-1722); returned to work at the Luxembourg Palace (1722-1725); Professor of Mathematics, College Royal (1718-1725, 1747-1761); went to Russia to found an observatory for Peter the Great (1725-1747); on his return to Paris, set up a new observatory at the Hotel de Cluny; withdrew to the Abbey of St Genevieve to devote himself to charitable and religious works (1763)
