OtherInfo | During the Civil Wars, Isham was a supporter of the royalist cause, which led to his imprisonment for delinquency. After his release, he had to compound for this with a fine of £1,100. After the Restoration, he continued to improve the family home of Lamport Hall by purchasing paintings, expanding the building, and adding to its library. While he was not particularly active in the work of the Royal Society, Isham was an active correspondent with contemporary scholars and natural philosophers, including Robert Boyle (FRS 1660), Seth Ward (FRS 1663), and Samuel Hartlib. Isham supported the education of his children from his second marriage, with his daughters Mary and Vere receiving lessons alongside their brothers. |
Source | Sources: Bulloch's Roll; DNB; Venn; Hunter; Henning; ODNB Notes: DNB gives years of birth and death as 1610 and 1674 respectively (probably Old Style). V Re-elected on 6 Nov 1673 after being proposed by Walter Needham; appears in 1674 list only. Letter from Oldenburg to Isham notifying him of his election implies that the later date was the official one (according to index to BR) - see "Correspondence of Duppa and Isham" (Biog I) p XLIII. |
